A newspaper has come under fire for describing a gold-medal winning American shooter as the "Wife of a [Chicago] Bears' lineman" on Twitter.

Corey Cogdell-Unrein, who is married to NFL player Mitch Unrein, won a bronze medal for the USA in the trap shooting on Sunday.

But when the Chicaco Tribune tweeted the report of her achievement, they failed to include her name, an oversight which prompted both criticism and derision. Here is the tweet and some of the reaction:

Perhaps one day too I will be allowed to be a man's wife and also be able to win something too.

@chicagotribune "Wife of Bears' lineman"? Hillary Clinton's presidency is going to be awfully rough for you bros.

The paper included her name in a later tweet.

Cogdell-Unrein's bronze replicated her third place in Beijing in 2008.

She was spurred on in Rio by her husband Mitch, and Cogdell-Unrein said: "It's been truly touching to see the Bears come together to support me."

"My husband and I are very competitive, we keep pushing each other to new levels, whether it's a board game or washing up!"

The first gold medal of the Olympics was won on Saturday by another American shooter, 19-year-old student Ginny Thrasher.
